House fire called suspicious

Hall County Fire Services is still trying to determine whether a fire that destroyed a duplex in the New Holland Mill area Sunday night is the result of arson.

Fire Chief David Kimbrell said the residential fire that the department responded to around 11:45 p.m. was deemed suspicious. The house at 30 Mill St. was vacant and was not connected to any electric or natural gas utilities when it caught fire Sunday night, he said.

The blaze could be seen from a mile away, and fire had spread to more than 80 percent of the 2,000-square-foot house by the time firefighters arrived, Kimbrell said.

"It was well advanced before we got the call," he said.

The department's investigators will likely determine the cause of the fire by Tuesday, Kimbrell said.
