A historic military vehicle will be in town today to raise awareness to needs for today's Americans in uniform.

Salute Our Troops is on tour around the state with a fully-refurbished 1952 Willys CJ-3 Jeep. It will make two stops in Gainesville today at Kangaroo convenience stores: from 8-10 a.m. at 2640 Dawsonville Highway and 4-6 p.m. at 506 Jesse Jewell Parkway.

The tour today and Monday is intended to raise awareness and donations for Salute Our Troops, which has raised more than $1.7 million for the USO, Wounded Warrior Project and state-based military support organizations, in this case the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation.

Its fundraising efforts will run through Labor Day.

The jeep has traveled along the South Carolina coast and will next head to Bainbridge and Thomasville.

Also today, the jeep will visit the U.S. Army Strong Bonds conference in Atlanta. Strong Bonds is a unit-based, chaplain-led program that provides relationship education and skills training.
