A town hall on the Republican alternative to Obamacare has been set for Thursday.

The town hall includes a panel of three health experts: Phaedra Corso, University of Georgia foundation professor of human health; Gale Starich, dean of Brenau University’s College of Health Sciences; and Rebecca Quigg, a practicing physician and a former congressional candidate in the 6th District, according to a Tuesday announcement for the town hall.

Jennifer LaRose, who has a child with health problems from birth, will tell about her situation and “share her concerns about the American health care system,” the announcement states.

The professors and doctors involved in the town hall have years of experience teaching, researching health care and policy, and practicing medicine.

The event is billed as nonpartisan but is being hosted by Josh McCall, Democratic challenger to U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, R-Gainesville, in 2018. In the announcement itself, sent from McCall’s campaign email, the Democrat is noted as having “has taken up the role of David vs. Goliath as he faces off with Doug Collins for a strongly conservative seat. Josh supports a National American Health Service, where nobody has to choose between poverty and death.”

The announcement from McCall also notes that Collins has no public events scheduled this week and that “apparently he has decided to join other House Republicans in not allowing the public to question him about his vote on this important issue.”

In a Tuesday statement responding to the town hall notice, Collins’ spokeswoman Jessica Andrews said the Republican would not attend the town hall “as he does not attend partisan political events held by potential political candidates.”

“The 9th District has consistently voted in favor of repealing and replacing Obamacare and continues to reject government-controlled health care, especially single-payer systems that many liberals support,” Andrews continued.

The town hall begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Gainesville Civic Center.
