Fire rages Tuesday night at the old Bona Allen Tannery in Buford.

Firefighters said they hoped to leave the scene Wednesday evening of a warehouse fire in Buford at a building formerly known as the Bona Allen Tannery.

Part of the building was recently being used to house a plumbing business that reportedly was no longer operating and said to be vacating the property. Firefighters arrived about 7 p.m. Tuesday to find heavy smoke and flames issuing from the windows and roof of the large masonry and heavy timber building. Fire crews operated at the scene overnight and allowed the fire to burn itself out, said Capt. Tommy Rutledge of the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

No injuries have been reported, he said.

Firefighters began to apply water on the deep-seated hot spots just before noon Wednesday.

“The structure is pretty much a total loss,” Rutledge said.

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation.
