Fire burns island in middle of Lake Lanier

Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said a fire burning on a 10-acre island in the middle of Lake Lanier was allowed to burn itself out.

Fire crews were dispatched to the island and found it about 50 percent involved in flames. The Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Natural Resources have been notified, Kimbrell said.

The fire was contained to the island with no exposures, and wind was not a factor, Kimbrell said.

“We do not have fire extinguishing capability on the lake,” Kimbrell said in an email.

The blaze possibly started from a campfire, he said.
