Construction should begin soon on a Culver’s restaurant off Dawsonville Highway/Ga. 53 and near Ahaluna Drive in Gainesville.

Mark Dahl, co-owner with his wife Dawn, said Monday he hopes the new eatery will be open in June.

Wisconsin-based Culver’s, which serves hamburgers, chicken, soups, milkshakes and frozen custard, has several Georgia restaurants, including locations in Dawsonville and Buford.

The restaurant is part of North Lake Square shopping center developed by Tim Knight.

“We are excited to bring Culver’s to Gainesville,” Knight said. “This is a great concept, and it will be well received like our other retailers.”

The 4,300-square-foot restaurant will feature a drive-thru and driveways leading to Ga. 53 and Ahaluna Drive, said Matt Tate, Gainesville planning manager.

“The property is the previous location of the car wash that was demolished,” he said.

Dahl said he is planning to move to Gainesville from Wisconsin in the next month or two as part of the new venture.

“It’s a really great area,” he said.

That section of Gainesville is going through a development boom.

North Lake Square features several retail and restaurant sites. The 94-room Holiday Inn Express across the road is set to open in the spring, the hotel chain has said.

And Danny’s Donuts is working to open its second Gainesville location in the Kohl’s-anchored shopping center off Dawsonville Highway.

One property that closed late last year is the Pollo Tropical in the front of North Lake Square.

Knight said North Lake Square still has an available 1.82-acre site across from HomeGoods and Burlington stores.

“Most likely, it will end up as a low-parking retail use,” such as a furniture store, he said.
