A 20-year-old College Park man drowned Tuesday while trying to swim from the beach to boat docks at Sunset Cove on Lake Lanier, authorities said.

The body of Shaquille Marquise Connor-Blunt was recovered by Hall County Emergency Medical Services at about 4:35 p.m., Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Melissa Cummings said.

Hall County Fire Services marine rescue unit divers found Connor-Blunt in about 17 feet of water. He was underwater for about 40 minutes, and efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said.

The victim entered the water along the shore and tried to swim, along with two others, to one of the boat docks approximately 100 yards away inside Sunset Cove, Kimbrell said.

About halfway, Connor-Blunt stated he couldn’t make it, and the three tried to turn around, Cummings said. As Connor-Blunt struggled, the others tried to help, but were almost overcome themselves.

“He became tired and went under,” Kimbrell said. “The two others were able to make it back to the shore.”

DNR and the Army Corps of Engineers are investigating.
