North Georgians nearly made it through a week without the threat of winter precipitation, but could see it in some areas tonight.
The National Weather Service is calling for a chance of a wintry mix, likely in the form of sleet and freezing rain, today in Gainesville and areas to the north as cold air rushes in amid a steady drizzle.
Temperatures are expected to fall toward freezing throughout the day after they reached 73 on Wednesday and lingered in the mid-60s overnight into dawn. Little or no accumulation is expected but puddles on roadways could freeze into patches of black ice overnight and make travel difficult Friday morning.
The rain should move out by Friday morning with temperatures rising only to the mid-40s under clear skies. A warming trend follows, with highs creeping back to the upper 50s by Saturday and Sunday.
