Celebrate the NFL’s 100-year birthday by volunteering with the food bank

Hall County community members are invited to celebrate 100 years of the NFL through volunteering at Georgia Mountain Food Bank any day in October.

As a part of the Huddle for 100, the NFL has set a nationwide goal of giving back 100 million minutes of service to charitable organizations.

Steve Mueller, operations director for Georgia Mountain Food Bank in Gainesville, said the Atlanta Falcons have decided to partner with the food bank for the special occasion.

Cheerleaders and Freddy Falcon, the team’s mascot, will make an appearance and volunteer from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11 and Friday, Oct. 22, at the food bank.

What: Volunteer effort with the Atlanta Falcons

When: 9-11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11 and Friday, Oct. 22

Where: Georgia Mountain Food Bank; 1642 Calvary Industrial Drive SW, Gainesville

Mueller said the organization will hand out Atlanta Falcons gifts like towels and koozies to lucky volunteers.

Although the cheerleaders and mascot will only be at the food bank on two days in October, Mueller encourages people interested in volunteering to visit any day during the month to contribute to the Huddle for 100.

“People should come out regardless of whether the Falcons will be here,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to get a takeaway from the Falcons and spend time contributing to the community through the Georgia Mountain Food Bank.”

First-time Georgia Mountain Food Bank volunteers must fill out a waiver online or onsite before helping out during the Huddle for 100. Mueller recommends going to gamountainfoodbank.org and clicking on the “Donate Time” icon to find and fill out the form. He said this process proves more convenient than waiting in line and completing it at the food bank.

Those who volunteer in October for the NFL’s initiative will have the job of sorting out salvaged, non-perishable food products.

Mueller said people will examine the items, making sure they’re safe to distribute out to the food bank’s partners.

Georgia Mountain Food Bank is located at 1642 Calvary Industrial Drive SW in Gainesville.
