Hall County Commissioner Billy Powell has heard the speculation.
In recent weeks, as candidates began announcing their intention to run for the Hall County Board of Commissioner’s chairman’s post in 2016, local attention turned to whether Powell would throw his hat in the race.
On Friday, Powell ended the guessing game in an interview with The Times.
“I have decided to remain focused on District 2 and will seek re-election next year,” he said. “We’ve got a lot going on in District 2, and I would like to see a lot of those projects followed through with.”
He had been rumored in local political circles to be considering a run as current Chairman Richard Mecum has said he has no desire at this time to seek re-election.
Steve Gailey, a former District 3 commissioner, has announced his candidacy for the seat. So, too, has
Richard Higgins, who served 11 years as chairman of the Hall County Board of Education.
Powell was first elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2004.
Powell said he hopes voters will continue to support him as a “co-captain of the ship” and “not just a passenger.”
