Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigating a complaint of a dog left unattended in a car discovered the car was reported stolen, according to authorities.
Jihad Abdul Karim, 24, of Atlanta, was arrested May 25 in the 7000 block of Lanier Islands Parkway, and he was charged with animal cruelty and felony theft by receiving.
Lt. Scott Ware said deputies were investigating a complaint of a dog, possibly a Yorkshire Terrier, “in a car with windows and doors closed.”
“The dog was believed to have been in (the) car unattended by its owner for 30 minutes to an hour,” Ware wrote in an email. “Once deputies were at the car to address the animal cruelty complaint, they ran (the) tag and (vehicle identification number) and then learned that the car was stolen.”
Ware said the dog is “OK as I understand it” and was taken by animal control.
The lieutenant said the car was reported stolen out of Maryland.
“The car was impounded, and later Mr. Karim approached deputies looking for his car,” Ware said.
Karim was booked into the Hall County Jail and has since bonded out.
No attorney information was listed for him with Hall County Magistrate Court, and no number was listed in online phone directories.
