An accident caused by a private tree service on Brenau Avenue has knocked out power for about 500 customers in the Green Street corridor and central downtown area of Gainesville, officials said.

Gainesville fire department firefighters responded to the call of a tree on a power line shortly after 10 a.m, Chief Jon Canada said.

Canada said a private tree service was taking a tree down near the Northeast Georgia History Center when a portion of the tree fell on a power line, knocking out power. Canada did not have the name of the company.

As of shortly before 11 a.m. Georgia Power personnel were working to restore power, company spokeswoman Konswello Monroe said.

Canada said fire officials were informed it would take about 90 minutes to restore power.
