A 21-year-old man drowned Sunday night while attempting to swim across a cove in the area of Big Creek Park in Lake Lanier in Buford, authorities said.

Using sonar, Georgia Department of Natural Resources rangers found the body of Daruba McFarlane of Stone Mountain at 9 p.m. in approximately 17 feet of water. The Hall County Fire Services dive team recovered the victim about 9:20 p.m.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Deputy Nicole Bailes said McFarlane was found in his last known location provided by witnesses.

Foul play is not suspected in the incident, according to Bailes. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

A friend reported the victim attempted to swim across a cove, had trouble and went underwater, according to Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesman Mark McKinnon.

Bailes said the caller described the 21-year-old “as being in distress after swimming about 25 yards from the bank.” Authorities responded after receiving the call about 7 p.m. Sunday.

Hall Fire Services, including Marine Rescue; the Hall County Sheriff’s Office; DNR; and the Forsyth County Marine Rescue Team were on the scene, Hall County Deputy Fire Chief Chad Black said.
