A Buford man was arrested on charges related to his 17-month-old daughter accidentally ingesting methamphetamine, police said.

Heriberto Benitez-Perez, 28, was charged with third-degree cruelty to children and possession of a controlled substance, Gwinnett police Cpl. David Schiralli said.

Police were called Sunday to Gwinnett Medical Center after 17-month-old Giselle Benitez was taken to the hospital with seizures. The girl allegedly drank an unknown liquid, which caused the seizures. After interviewing the parents, it was determined that the liquid contained methamphetamine, Schiralli said.

Toxicology tests were positive for methamphetamine in the child’s system, Schiralli said.

Benitez-Perez remains in the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond. His daughter was in critical but stable condition on Tuesday.
