12 days to a fire-safe Christmas: Keep decorations away from heat; dont block escapes

Holiday decorations add to the festive nature of the season but can also add to the fire risk in homes. Remember these safety tips when decorating your home for the holidays:

Use only nonflammable decorations. This includes eliminating the use of live tree branches or greenery.

All decorations should be placed away from heat vents.

If you are using an artificial or metallic tree, make sure it is flame-retardant. Only use lights and decorations that are approved for artificial trees.

When hanging the stockings by the fireplace, make sure that they are kept away from any fire that is burning. There should be at least 3 feet between the fire and any combustible items.

Maintain exit paths throughout the home. Do not let decorations, either inside or outside, obstruct doorways or hallways. This will allow for easy escape in case of fire.

With the onset of the holiday season, it is important to focus on fire safety and prevention. For 12 days, Hall County Fire Services will be providing tips for making your holidays safe. For more information, contact Lt. Beverley Walker with Hall County Fire Services at 770-531-6838.
