The 2010 FalCan Food Drive School Challenge collected 41,628 pounds of canned goods and non-perishable food items. Forty schools participated in the 2010 drive. Both Gainesville Exploration Academy (1575 pounds) and Gainesville Middle School (1458 pounds) were in the top ten schools for food collected.
Patrick Kelley, a junior at Gainesville High School, won an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the 2011 Washington Youth Tour as the winner of the Jackson Electric Membership Corporation 2010 Energy Bowl Challenge.
In addition to the trip, Patrick's winnings also include a $2,000 scholarship and a $1,000 educational grant for his school.
The Nov. 18 academic quiz bowl tested Northeast Georgia high school students' knowledge of energy and other science-related topics. Kelley competed against students from 19 other area high schools.
Other finalists included: Leah Granger, first runner-up, West Hall High School; Jacob Meadows, Grayson High School; Shawn Albert, the Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Technology; and Shushmita Hoque, Brookwood High School. All finalists received a gift card, iPod, gift bag and a certificate of achievement.

Jackson EMC will select a second Washington Youth Tour delegate in March through the Youth Citizenship Award program, which rewards students with outstanding community involvement. Beginning Dec. 15, applications may be obtained from area high school guidance counselors or through the Jackson EMC website at www.jacksonemc.com/citizenship. The deadline for applications is Feb. 28.
