Gainesville High School's construction class recently constructed a roofed structure on the playground of First Presbyterian Church's Child Development Center to house tricycles and other riding toys. Materials for the construction were donated in memory of Wanda Love Collins by her family and friends. Darrell Lucas, teacher of the construction class at Gainesville High, directed the work.

Hall County leaders graduated Nov. 13 from the 2008 Region 2 Multi-Day Training Program. held by the Georgia Academy for Economic Development. Training focused on the complexities of economic and community development on the local, regional and state levels.

Linda Kern was awarded the 2008 Jennie Kern Outstanding Volunteer Award at the winter games of the Hall County Area Special Olympiads, held recently at Yonah Bowl and Skate in Cleveland.

Gainesville High School's Naval JROTC Rifle Team competed in an Area 12 Shoulder to Shoulder regional competition on Dec. 7. The varsity precision team came in fourth place. The top shooter was senior Chris Hernandez with a score of 275. Student Toderick Williams won the top rookie precision category with a score of 272. The junior varsity sporter team got its highest team score of the year, 942, and sophomore Alex Uscanga shot a personal best of 245 and received a first-place medal for the highest prone score of 97. The team will shoot its last Navy qualifier on Jan. 10 at Westside High School in Augusta. The season starts on Jan. 8 when Gainesville High is host to Riverside Military Academy.
