The Gainesville Modern Topics Study Club recently was honored for 100 years of activity by Sen. Butch Miller and Gov. Nathan Deal at the state Capitol.
The study club has met on a regular basis continually since 1915, with the exception of the time after the 1936 tornado that killed hundreds.
The young women who started the group were eager to learn and share their knowledge with one another. They were also instrumental in beginning the first local library in Gainesville and helped support hospitalized servicemen during World War II and the Korean War.
Today the club meets monthly to learn and share knowledge with one another and provide community support.
