Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Ross Barber of Gainesville announce the engagement of their daughter Dr. Deborah Lynn Barber to Capt. Douglas Benjamin Shores, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Alan Shores of Renton, Wash.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Barber of Sandy Springs and the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Summerour.

She is a 2000 graduate of Johnson High School in Gainesville. She graduated in 2004 from Berry College with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and chemistry. She received a doctorate at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Starkville, Miss. She is employed as an associate veterinarian at Heritage Animal Hospital in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

The groom-elect is the grandson of Mrs. Jackie Shores of Pamona, Calif., and Mr. Virgil Heugel of San Luis Obisbo, Calif.

He is a 1999 graduate of Kentridge Senior High in Kent, Wash. He graduated in 2003 from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., with a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering. He is a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps in Beaufort, S.C.

The couple plan to wed April 24, 2010, in Beaufort.
