Spring is here, which means the annual Spring Chicken Festival Chicken Cook-off is just around the corner.

The event will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on April 24 in downtown Gainesville, at Roosevelt Square. Registration is now open for the two divisions: Professional and Backyard Barbecue. Prizes will be awarded in both categories, and winners receive $500 and the coveted Chicken City Cup for one year.

Rules and guidelines, along with a registration form, are available here. the registration deadline is April 12.

Event organizer Cindy Reed said the event is just one way to promote our fowl friend that made Gainesville the poultry capital of the world.

"This festival gets bigger and bigger every year, and the competition for cooking the best chicken is quite fierce," said Reed, who is also director of Keep Hall Beautiful, in a prepared statement. "We are Georgia's 'official chicken cook-off' and our No. 1 rule is to
have fun."

Tickets for the general public are $8 adults, $5 children younger than 10, and will include samples provided by the teams for judging.

The festival will also include the Rubber ChickEkiden, a Chicken Feathers quilt show and children's activities provided by Interactive Neighborhood for Kids.

Also, many of Gainesville's artists are participating in the "Fowl Art" Art Show, on display through April 24 at Frames You-Nique in Gainesville.

Proceeds from the event benefit Keep Hall Beautiful's Tree Replacement Fund and Environmental Education Programs. For more
