The Buford softball team dominated Riverwood in a doubleheader Tuesday evening in the first round of 5A state playoffs, winning 17-0 and 16-1 to advance to the second round.
Ansleigh Hollifield got the start in Game 1 for the Lady Wolves, striking out two in one inning of work. Anabel Adams, Emi Hall and Abbi Perkins all went 2 for 2 in the contest, combining for five RBIs. Emma Castorri launched a 3-run homer in the third to push Buford over the run rule and end the game.
Riley Reese started for the Lady Wolves in Game 2, striking out four over three innings without allowing any hits. Perkins batted 3 for 4 with five RBIs, and Adams and Shamya Young each added two more hits and four RBIs a piece to lead Buford offensively.
The Lady Wolves will play their next round at home next Tuesday against the winner of Ware County and Ola high schools.
Isabella Appling had three aces, 14 digs and 16 kills for Gainesville in a 25-27, 25-22, 15-9 win against Jefferson on Tuesday. Camille Calkins chipped in three aces, four blocks and nine kills, while Camille Holcomb added 16 assists and five digs. Also for the Lady Red Elephants, Ansley Turner had 12 kills and 10 digs, while Lauren Teasley had three blocks and four kills.
Up next, Gainesville takes part in the Area 8-6A tournament.
