The Gwinnett Braves went jumped to an early 2-0 first-inning lead against the Charlotte Knights in Fort Mill, S.C., but ended up losing 8-6 on Saturday.
G-Braves starter Jose Ortegano struggled with his control, walking 10 batters and giving up seven hits and six runs in 3 2/3 innings, allowing the Knights to build a lead they would never surrender.
Gwinnett’s offense did its part to keep the G-Braves in the game, with Freddie Freeman, Joe Thurston and Wilkin Ramirez all hitting home runs. For Freeman, it was his 17th home run of the season. Matt Young was 3-for-4 with three stolen bases.
Gwinnett (61-66) will play the series finale Sunday at 2:15 p.m., with Kenshin Kawakimi scheduled to take the mound.
