Football Player of the Week: Jacob Dickey makes strong first impression in North Hall backfield

Of all the plays North Hall running back Jacob Dickey was expecting to make in the Trojans Week 1 game against Chestatee last Friday, a deep receiving touchdown was not one of them.

North Hall’s Wing-T attack doesn’t call for much passing, but in a third-and-long situation, Trojans coach David Bishop dialed up a throw targeting Dickey on a backside post route.

“I wasn’t really expecting that call from coach Bishop,” he said.

Dickey caught the ball right off his break toward the goal post, about 30 yards down the field, and saw a wide open field in front of him.

“It was a pretty easy play,” he said. “Trey (Sanders) put the ball in a good spot for me to go get it.”

Dickey sprinted the rest of the way into the end zone for a 71-yard touchdown, the longest play in the game. Dickey added 14 carries for 91 yards and another touchdown on the ground, an effort good enough to earn him Times Player of the Week honors for Week 1.

It was a performance that should allow North Hall football fans to breathe a sigh of relief.

In the team’s first game after losing offensive stars Daniel Jackson, Drew Faulkner and David Seavey to graduation, Dickey, JT Fair and Cody Smith all rushed for at least 80 yards, proving they are more than up to the task of picking up the slack from last season’s seniors.

“I know that we lost Daniel Jackson, and he was a big part of our team, and Drew Faulkner, too,” Dickey said. “But I think that me and Cody Smith aren’t too bad to pick up what they left for us.”

Behind a strong rushing game, North Hall beat Chestatee 34-14 to start the year. Dickey believes the early success is an indicator of another big season for the Trojans, coming off their first road playoff win in program history.

“I think we started out great,” he said. “I’m excited for the season to come.”
