Local sports briefs: Putting title goes to Nicholson man

Warren Standridge of Nicholson posted a 36-hole score of 72 to win the Northeast Georgia/Upper South Carolina Putting Championship finals Saturday at Apple Mountain Golf Course in Clarkesville.

Standridge defeated a field of 33 other finalists who won their qualifiers at various golf courses across Northeast Georgia and South Carolina.

Joshua Gragg of Tiger and Tommy Richardson of Clayton finished second, each shooting a 74.

Walter Ramsey of Clayton was the winner of a raffle to win $5,000 if he made a 60-foot putt, but missed the shot.

Roberts scores ace on Chicopee hole

Duane Roberts shot a hole-in-one Sunday at Chicopee Woods Golf Course.

Roberts recorded the shot on Hole No. 2 Mill, using a PW club and a Titleist Pro V1 ball.

Witnesses were Blake Nix and Simmie Miller.

Malquist soars to new heights

Gainesville High’s Paul Malquist won the Southeastern Pole Vault Challenge with a height of 16 feet, 6.75 inches Saturday in Athens.

Malquist’s winning vault is the second-highest in Georgia history, and the seventh in the nation this year.

Malquist won the Class AAA state title in the pole vault in May and also won gold at the Georgia Games in July.
