Local sports briefs: Gainesville's Cole wins junior tournament

Gainesville High golfer Camryn Cole shot a 36 to win the rain-shortened 18-Hole Open Girls 7-18 division of an Atlanta Junior Golf Association event held Tuesday at Chestatee Golf Course in Dawsonville.

Other area top finishers were Will Franklin (fourth, 18-Hole Open Boys 15-18), Reeves Bell (fifth, 18-Hole Open Boys 13-14), Hunter Young (second, 18-Hole Club Boys 13-14), Spencer Ralston (second, 18-Hole Boys 12 and Under) and Charley Whitmire (fifth, 18-Hole Open Girls 17-18).

Darnell tied for third at Women's PGA Open

Gainesville High graduate Lauren Darnell fired a first-round 69 (-3) and sits tied for third place with Jackie Syzmoniak after one round of the Georgia Women’s PGA Open on Wednesday at the Canongate at Summer Grove Golf Course in Newnan. Darnell is only one stroke behind leaders Mariah Stackhouse, the reigning Georgia Amateur champion, and defending Georgia Junior PGA champion Kendall Wright.

Stackhouse was penalized two shots on No. 10 when she discovered there were 15 clubs in her bag.

Players that shot a 1-under in the first round include Emilie Burger, a Mill Creek High graduate, Katelyn Stanier, Dori Carter and Angela Jerman.

The final round of the Georgia Women’s Open starts at 8 a.m. today with the final pairing teeing off at 9:40 a.m.

The Georgia PGA is one of 41 sectionals of the PGA of America. Its membership includes nearly 850 PGA professionals working at more than 260 golf courses, clubs and ranges throughout the state.
