This week kicks of the second round of GHSA playoff baseballs, and four area schools — White County, Gainesville and North Hall in Class AAA, and Buford in AA — are still alive.
White County, Region 8’s top seed, will host Allatoona, while Gainesville (8-AAA No. 2 seed) and North Hall (8-AAA No. 3 seed) will travel to top seeds Woodward Academy and Cartersville, respectively. All series are best-of-three and begin Wednesday. Game times have yet to be determined.
The seventh-ranked Warriors (23-4) made quick work of Carrollton in the opening round, outscoring the Trojans 21-13 in a two-game sweep.
After splitting their first two games with Troup, the ninth-ranked Red Elephants (24-5) won convincingly in the finale, 14-5. They’ll face a red-hot, eighth-ranked Warriors team that swept Heritage-Catoosa by a combined score of 31-10.
North Hall (23-6) won Game 3 at LaGrange in dramatic fashion, erupting for seven runs in the ninth inning for a 10-3 victory.
Buford, 6-AA’s top seed, swept Fannin County by a combined score of 23-1 and will host defending state champion Calhoun (7-AA No. 2 seed). The Yellow Jackets swept Temple by a combined score of 25-3.
In soccer, the lone area school remaining is Habersham Central’s boys, but the Raiders are going strong. A No. 1 seed from 8-AAAA, they have beaten Tucker, Pope and Starr’s Mill on penalty kicks. In Wednesday’s semifinals, they’ll travel to face top-ranked Chattahoochee.
ATLANTA BRAVES: The Braves look to build on a strong run last week that saw them reach a six-game win streak. They earned a four-game sweep of the Brewers, took two of three from the Phillies and have won nine of their last 12.
They open a seven-game home stand against NL East opponents Washington and Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Tim Hudson, fresh off a one-hitter in his last outing, is expected to take the mound Tuesday, facing off against Jason Marquis of the Nationals.
