Riverside Military Academy has named Lazarus Chennault, Jr. as head basketball coach. He will take charge of the Eagles varsity team beginning with the 2012-13 season. He takes over for Ron Smith, who departs after two seasons at the helm.

Chennault joined Riverside in 2008 and has been coaching there since 2009. He was an assistant on the 2009-2010 team that won its 8-AA subregion and earned a state playoff berth.

Chennault began his playing career at Washington-Wilkes where he was all-region and all-state as a junior and senior in Class AA. After graduating from high school in 1993, he attended Carl Sandburg Junior College in Illinois and was in Streets and Smith magazine’s junior college honorable mention list. He went on to attend Western Carolina University where he helped win the Southern Conference Championship and gain an entry into the 1996 NCAA Tournament.

Following a professional career that included stints in the USBL and in Mexico, Chennault began coaching at Washington-Wilkes as an assistant from 2004-07. During his three seasons there, he helped lead the school to the state playoffs.
