Prep basketball roundup: Lady Spartans edge Pickens for OT win

The West Hall High girls defeated Pickens 52-47 in overtime thanks in large part to some clutch free-throw shooting. The Lady Spartans (8-7, 2-1 Region 7B-AAA) hit 6-of-8 from the line in the closing moments of the game.

Junior forward Jayla Moon led West Hall with 20 points, while Kim Smigelsky added 15.

Sophomore center Lindsey Hammontree led Pickens with 13 points. Lindsey Logan added 12, including a 3-pointer that sent the game into overtime.

West Hall plays host to West Forsyth at 7 p.m. Friday.

West Hall boys 76, Pickens 42
Four Spartans scored in double digits as Ricky Vital and Shunquez Stephens each scored 13, Terrell Penland finished with 12 and Derek Weatherly added 11 as West Hall (8-7, 2-1 Region 7B-AAA) routed Pickens on Tuesday night in Oakwood.

Bob Jasperse led Pickens (1-13, 0-3) with 10 points.

West Hall plays host to West Forsyth at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Lakeview girls 32, Jefferson 31
Lakeview Academy guard Janell Francis hit a free throw with 18 seconds remaining as the Lady Lions (5-6, 4-1 Region 8N-A) squeezed past Jefferson on Tuesday night. Francis finished the game with nine points.

Lady Lions sophomore Louisa Jacobs led all scorers with 10 points.

Senior shooting guard Caroline Adams led Jefferson (8-6, 3-2 Region 8N-A) with seven points.

Lakeview Academy visits Tallulah Falls at 6 p.m. Friday. Jefferson visits Towns County at 7 p.m. Friday.

Lakeview boys 72, Jefferson 66
Lakeview Academy completed the sweep of Jefferson, defeating the Dragons on Tuesday night in Jefferson.

Senior shooting guard David Pruett led the Lions (6-7) with 26 points. Haughton Carswell finished with 11 and Colin King added 10.

Junior Demetri Robinson led Jefferson with 15 points.

Lakeview visits Tallulah Falls at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while Jefferson travels to Towns County at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Gainesville girls 69, Johnson 42
Gainesville High sophomore Jaymee Carnes scored 21 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Lady Red Elephants (13-4, 3-0 Region 7B-AAA) cruised to victory Tuesday night in Gainesville.

Hailey Solomon added 10 points and six rebounds for Gainesville.

Jordan Gustavel led the Lady Knights (2-12, 1-2) with 21 points. Haley Chapman added 14.

Gainesville plays host to Flowery Branch at 7 p.m. Friday, while Johnson visits Pickens at the same time.

Gainesville boys 92, Johnson 89
Allan Dockery scored a season-high 28 points as Gainesville defeated Johnson on Tuesday night in Gainesville. George Manomano added 23 points for Gainesville (8-8).

Johnson senior Brandon Sloan led the Knights with 22 points, while Devaris Finch added 19.

Gainesville plays host to Flowery Branch at 8:30 p.m. Friday, while Johnson visits Pickens at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Buford girls 66, Decatur 47
Class AA’s fourth-ranked Lady Wolves defeated Decatur on Tuesday night in Buford, as forward Jocelyn Danley scored 21 points and Blanche Alverson finished with 12.

Buford sophomore Alysha Rudnik added nine.

Buford (15-2, 9-1 Region 6S-AA) visits Class AA’s top-ranked Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Friday.

Decatur boys 45, Buford 32
Melvin Harris scored 12 points and Twoey Hosch added 10, but it wasn’t enough as the Wolves (6-9, 0-3 Region 6S-AA) fell to Decatur on Tuesday night in Buford.

Decatur’s Corey Spraggins led all scorers with 15 points.

Buford visits Wesleyan at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Chestatee girls 47, White Co. 38
Chestatee freshman forward Peyton Robertson finished with her third-straight double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 11 rebounds Tuesday night in Gainesville.

Lady War Eagles senior point guard Kasey Smith added 11 points.

Chestatee (8-9, 3-0 Region 7N-AAA) visits Gilmer at 7 p.m. Friday.

Chestatee boys 54, White Co. 45
Tennessee State signee Parker Smith led Chestatee with 18 points as the War Eagles edged White County on Tuesday night in Gainesville.

According to Chestatee coach Russ Triaga, the difference in the game came down to sophomore Lamar Brooks and junior Brandon Smith. Brooks hit three clutch 3-pointers in the final quarter, and Smith added five points of his own.

White County senior Tyler Norman led all scorers with 26 points.

Chestatee (14-4, 2-1 Region 7A-AAA) visits Gilmer at 8:30 p.m. Friday, while White County plays host to East Hall at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Flowery Branch boys 67, West Forsyth 41
Junior forward Izaan Cross led the Falcons with 21 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday night in Cumming. Otis Clark scored eight, while Josh Barrett, Brian Welchel and Chris Lipscomb each scored seven for Flowery Branch (14-2, 3-0 Region 7B-AAA).

Josh Benedict led West Forsyth with 13 points.

Flowery Branch visits Gainesville at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Dawson County boys 49, Union County 45
Dawson County extended its winning streak to eight games, defeating Union County on Tuesday night in Blairsville.

Zach Cook led the Tigers (11-5, 2-1 Region 8B-AA) with 18 points. Nick Fiorentino added nine.

Dawson County visits Rabun County at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
