North Hall High junior Paul Powers set two state records in the preliminaries of the state championships Friday with a time of 44.02 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and 20 seconds in the 50 free at Georgia Tech.

With his times, Powers advanced to the finals in both events Saturday, also at Georgia Tech.

Powers, brother Ty, and teammates Bradley Brown and David Schofield helped the North Hall relay teams advance to Saturday’s finals with times of 1 minute, 38.38 seconds in the 200 medley relay and 1:27.81 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Ty also advanced to the 50 free finals with a time of 20.85 seconds and the 100 breaststroke finals at 58.59 seconds.

Gainesville’s Colin Monaghan had a stellar showing in the preliminary rounds as well. Monaghan finished the 200 individual medley in 1 minute, 53.83 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 51.93 seconds, both good enough for spots in the finals.

Tristan Taylor of Chestatee will represent the War Eagles in the 200 free finals after finishing his preliminary race in 1 minute, 46.57 seconds.

Buford’s Danielle Brooks reached the finals in the girls’ 50 free with a time of 24.67 seconds. She will also compete in the girls’ 200 free relay finals with teammates Libby Muret, Brittany Litke and Molly Moran.
