Cody Barger has added another accolade to his résumé.

Already a state champion and The Times 2010 Cross Country Runner of the Year, on Thursday, the North Hall senior was named the 2010-2011 Gatorade Georgia Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year after an outstanding fall season.

Barger, who led the Trojans to a second-place team finish in the Class AAA meet in November, is now a finalist for the national Gatorade award, to be announced later this month.

His time of 15 minutes, 35.91 seconds was good enough not only to win the Class AAA individual state championship, it was the fastest time in any classification at the state meet. Barger’s other wins this season included the Northeast Georgia Championships, the Berry Invitational Class A-AAA race, the War Eagle Invitational, the West Hall Invitational, the Warpath Invitational, the Hall County Championships, the Alexander/ASICS Invitational, the Runners Fit Mountain Invitational, the Carrollton Last Chance meet and the Region 8-AAA Championships.

He placed 16th at the Foot Locker South Regional championships with a time of 15:20 and is a three-time top-10 finisher at state, taking fourth as a junior and ninth as a sophomore.

Barger, who will attend the United States Military Academy at West Point in the fall, has also excelled away from the trail. He has maintained a 4.00 weighted GPA and has donated his time in several volunteer ventures, including as a youth running instructor.

“He’s not only a great runner, but a team leader,” North Hall coach Drew Rogers said.
