Twelve local athletes were recently acknowledged for their excellence in the classroom, playing field and community by being named Wendy’s High School Heisman school winners.

The award, which was created in 1994, provides each school the opportunity to nominate both a male and female student-athlete that exemplifies excellence in community and school leadership, academics and athletics.

The local student-athletes who were named school winners are: Nolan Alexander (Buford), Daunte Carr (Gainesville), Brannon Chandler (Chestatee), Chelsea Wilson (Chestatee), Alexia Miller (Jackson County), Rob Williams (Jackson County), Gregory Edwards (East Hall), Haley Chapman (East Hall), Jesse Cash (Dawson County), Jessica Young (Johnson), Jordan Wilkes (White County) and Mark Moody (White County).

After the school winners were announced, the field of nominees was cut into 10 males and 10 females who were named state winners.

From there, 12 national finalists were named, with the winners announced Dec. 11, the day before the Heisman Trophy presentation.

Malia Cali from Hammond, La. and Kyle Pollock from Wiggins, Colo. were named this year’s High School Heisman national winners.
