HS wrestling scoreboard: Falcons win area tourney

Zach Winter (138 pounds), Grant Simonds (182) and Devante King (195) all won area titles to lead Flowery Branch to a top finish in the Area 8-AAAAA Traditional wrestling tournament Saturday in Flowery Branch.

The Falcons, who finished with 200.5 points, qualified 11 wrestlers for the state sectionals tournament starting Friday at Loganville, including second place finishers Ben Horton (126), Anthony Williams (170) and R.J. Deyton (285), third-place finishers Ronny Couch (113), Nolan Alspach (120), Brady Dyer (145) and Quinton Newman (160), and fourth place finisher Daniel Boddie (132).

BANKS COUNTY WINS AREA 4-AAA: The Leopards recorded 208 points to hold off Oconee County (196 points) and win the Area 4-AAA Traditional tournament Saturday in Elberton.

Buford (168) finished third, followed by Jackson County (157), Elbert County (156), North Hall (151), White County (118), East Hall (107) and West Hall (96).

North Hall qualified seven wrestlers to state sectionals Saturday at Morgan County, including area champ Tyler Kratzer (145 pounds), third-place finisher Taylor Marett (106), and fourth-place finishers Michael Carew (120), Tyler Goss (126), David Lush (132), Austin Truelove (138) and Matthew Scavuzzo (152).

East Hall had four wrestlers qualify for state, including Corey Reece in second, and Will Davidson, Edward Vergara and J.D. Holloway third.

West Hall finished with an area champion in 152-pounder Elliot Raiford, the Spartans’ lone wrestler to finish in the top four to advance.
