The Flowery Branch girls tennis team lost Tuesday in the Class AAAA state quarterfinals at Johns Creek, bringing a close to the program’s most successful season to date.
The No. 2 and 3 singles matches were halted after the top-ranked Gladiators took wins at No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles, securing a 3-0 win.
“Johns Creek is a darn good team,” said Flowery Branch coach Ginger Jackson, who guided the Lady Falcons to their first region championship and first state quarterfinals appearance this season. “I’d be shocked if they don’t win state.
“But it’s like I told the girls, I hate to lose, but we climbed mountains this season and we accomplished a lot. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
The loss marked the end of the careers for No. 1 doubles player Bekki Benton and No. 2 singles player Elizabeth Mallory. The Lady Falcons’ other five starters are set to return in 2013.
