Jackson County takes Region 8-AAA softball title

The Jackson County High softball team won the Region 8-AAA softball championship with a 3-1 win in the best-of-three series against Franklin County on Saturday. With the win, the Panthers are the No. 1 seed to the playoffs and face Cartersville with two games in the best-of-three series on Wednesday at a time still to be determined in Jefferson. If necessary, Game 3 is Thursday.

Against Franklin County, sophomore Peyton Sorrells earned the win for the Lady Panthers by throwing six innings and allowing six hits.

Senior Victoria Fontana had two infield singles for Jackson County. She also scored a run and drove in another run.

Jackson County split a pair of games Thursday to open the championship series, losing 3-2 followed by a 12-4 win.

Over five games in region tournament play, Jessica Baker led the Lady Panthers with seven singles, a double and a home run. Madi Pecht and Sorrells each hit safely in seven plate appearances, while Shelton Kendrix went 6 for 19.

EAST HALL WINS 4 MATCHES: Class AAA’s eighth-ranked Lady Vikings (28-12) sweep matches in straight sets against Lumpkin County (25-4, 25-20), Walnut Grove (25-16, 25-13), Loganville (25-14, 25-18) and Morgan County (25-22, 25-21) on Saturday at Monroe Area High. With the wins, East Hall secures its first winning season in program history and finished the regular season on a 10-match winning streak.

For East Hall, Brittney Campbell had 75 assists, 27 digs and seven kills, while Emily Hoggard provided 19 kills, 16 digs and six aces. Kara Hix finished with 62 digs, seven kills and six assists for East Hall, while Tarryn Long chipped in 46 kills, 27 digs and seven aces.

Next, East Hall faces West Hall in the Area 5-AAA tournament on Tuesday at Blessed Trinity in Roswell.

WEST HALL WINS TWICE: Laykin Herford had 43 assists, and Kelsi Jones came away with 33 kills and six aces in a pair of wins for the Lady Spartans on Saturday at Monroe Area High. West Hall topped Winder-Barrow (25-14, 25-14) and Monroe Area (25-16, 25-17).

West Hall’s two loses came against Morgan County (25-22, 25-17) and Walnut Grove (25-16, 25-18).   

HERITAGE FALLS TO ALLELUIA: Heritage Academy lost its match to Alleluia 25-10, 25-12, 25-12 on Saturday.
