Treacherous driving exercise

Lauren Kirk and Corrie Thomas each scored a goal in the second half to lead the No. 7 Flowery Branch girls to a 2-1 victory over Winder Barrow in the Region 8-AAAAA opener on Friday at Falcon Field. Winder-Barrow scored off a corner kick about 15 minutes in and remained ahead 1-0 until the 20-minute mark of the second half, when Kirk scored off a deflected shot by Thomas.

Thomas scored herself seven minutes later to put the Lady Falcons on top. Flowery Branch (5-1-1, 1-0 8-AAAAA) recorded 17 shots on goal to Winder-Barrow’s two.

The Lady Falcons host Forsyth Central at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Flowery Branch.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY BOYS 2, WHITE COUNTY 0: Chance Calderhead scored two goals, both on assists by Nathan Zottnick, and Lions goalkeeper Dalton Snyder recorded the shutout in goal. Lakeview Academy (4-2) hosts Lumpkin County at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Gainesville.

CHESTATEE GIRLS 3, WALNUT GROVE 2: Chestatee built a 2-0 halftime lead off breakaway goals by Hope Baxter and Alyssa Yarck but saw it slip away in the second half.

Walnut Grove struck at the 25th minute in the second half to cut the lead in half.

Chestatee (5-2, 2-0 Region 8-AAAA) had several opportunities to put the game away but was whistled for multiple offsides calls before Walnut Grove (4-3, 2-1) tied the game with 7:43 and seized the momentum.

The game appeared headed for overtime until Chestatee’s Nina Burgess broke from the midfield and notched the winning goal with 1:56 left.

The Lady War Eagles had to fight off two corner kick attacks by the Warriors in the last seconds to hold on and secure their second region win.

Chestatee hosts Stephens County at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Gainesville.

EAST HALL BOYS 2, LANIER 2: The second-ranked East Hall boys earned their second tie of the week in a 1-1 final against Lanier on Friday in Gainesville, just three days after finishing deadlocked 2-2 on the road against Mountain View. The Vikings (3-0-3, 1-0 Region 1-0) face White County on Tuesday.

JEFFERSON 17, GREENE COUNTY 0, GAME 1 (3 INNINGS), JEFFERSON 17, GREENE COUNTY 0, GAME 2 (3 INNINGS): Micah Carpenter was the winning pitcher for Jefferson in Game 1, while Ethan Garner picked up the win on the mound in Game 2. Will Breese went 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored for the Dragons in Game 2. Jefferson (6-3, 2-0 Region 8-AA) will host Riverside Military Academy at 5:55 p.m. on Tuesday.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 12, GAINESVILLE 2: The Bears dealt the Red Elephants (3-1) their first loss of the season on Friday. Michael Gettys took the loss on the mound for the Red Elephants, who host Alpharetta at 5:55 p.m. on Monday in Gainesville.
