The North Hall boys cross country team, state runners-up in Class AAA last season, opened 2012 with a first place finish in the championship race at the Northeast Georgia Championships on Saturday at Athens Christian.
North Hall’s Witt Nix (16 minutes 20 seconds) led the Trojans with a third place finish, Tucker LoCicero (16:21) finished fourth and Bryce Schuebert (16:23) fifth. Zack Hill (16:52) finished 10th and Luis Galban rounded out the top five for North Hall, coming in 25th.
The Lady Trojans finished fourth in the championship race, led by Victoria Rogers (23:35) in ninth place. Makayla Ellis (21:01) finished 14th, Katie McDowell (21:22) came in 22nd, and April Barth (21:48) and Savannah Mendenhall (22:20) rounded out the top five North Hall finishers.
North Hall will next run Sept. 6 at the War Eagle Invitational, hosted by Chestatee High and run at the course at Chestatee Academy.
FLOWERY BRANCH TEAMS TAKE THIRD: The Flowery Branch boys and girls cross country teams both finished third in the championship race at the Northeast Georgia Championships.
The Falcons were led by Taylor Fiorello in sixth place and Nick Ashmead in seventh. Girls top finishers were Cassie Ward (fourth) and Lauren Kirk (ninth).
CHESTATEE GIRLS FINISH SECOND: Tori Mullinax (20:32) won the varsity race at the Northeast Georgia Championships and Lady War Eagles teammate Sarah Beth English (20:34) finished second, leading the Chestatee girls to a second overall finish, losing to varsity champs Jefferson on a tiebreaker.
The Chestatee boys finished fifth in the varsity race. Jose Reyes-LaValle (18:29) led the way with a 15th overall finish and Jack Carnes (18:39) finished 21st. The War Eagles travel next week to Murray County for the Fort Mountain Challenge run.
LAKEVIEW BOYS TAKE FOURTH: Junior Dustin Snyder finshed second overall in the varsity race (17:43), sophomore Lewis Brooks third (17:44) and junior Dalton Snyder fourth (17:49) in the Northeast Georgia Championship.
Freshman Mary Kaitlin Hocker finished 22nd overall in the varsity girls race with a time of 24:10.
Buford won a pair of games at North Georgia College & State University on Saturday to stay undefeated on the season, taking down North Forsyth 4-2 and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 6-1.
Lady Wolves pitcher Bria Bush (5-0) pitched her fifth complete game of the season for the win over the Lady Raiders, going seven innings and striking out eight while allowing five hits, three walks and one earned run.
Senior Jazmin Hawkins finished 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored, Niki Cook went 2 for 4 with a run and a steal, Sydney Stavro finished 2 for 2 with a steal and Bush and Drew Puckett each drove in a run for Buford.
Buford senior Bekah Rude (3-0) recorded the win over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in the pitching circle, going four innings, striking out one and allowing six hits, two walks and one earned run.
Lady Wolves senior Alexis Baldy went 2 for 3 with an inside-the-park home run, Cook went 2 for 4 with a run, Hawkins finished 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run and a steal.
Jefferson (11-4) finished 4-1 in its first five home matches at the 12-team Jefferson Dragonfest on Saturday.
Lady Dragons hitter Sarah Wood led the way with 44 kills, 10 aces and six blocks during the day, and Grace Williamson and Paige Watson added 38 and 36 assists, respectively, over the five games.
Jefferson defeated Athens Christian (26-24, 25-20), Grayson (25-10, 25-11), Tallulah Falls (25-15, 25-20) and East Jackson (25-16, 25-12). The Lady Dragons fell to Apalachee 25-27, 15-25. Jefferson faces Gilmer in a tri-match with West Hall on Monday in Oakwood.
LAKEVIEW FINISHES 4-1 at JEFFERSON: Lakeview Academy (9-6) went 4-1 at the Jefferson Dragonfest in Jefferson. The Lady Lions defeated Winder-Barrow (25-10, 25-12), Eastside (25-13, 25-11), Central Gwinnett (25-10, 25-17) and Chestatee (25-17, 25-18) before losing to Rabun County (20-25, 25-18, 16-18).
Lakeview’s Katie White finished the day with 35 kills, seven aces, 23 digs and one block. Shelby Ross added 15 kills, 14 aces, 12 digs, and five blocks. Bailey Towles had 36 assists, 28 aces and 12 digs. Samantha VerSteeg had 31 digs and Lilly Evans added 14.
Lakeview will host Tallulah Falls on Tuesday.
