The Gainesville High football program made a run to the Class AAAAA state quarterfinals this season, while West Hall earned the Region 7-AAA championship.

Both the Red Elephants and Spartans were rewarded with three players making the Georgia Sportswriters Association All-State team, which was released Thursday.

For Gainesville, wide receiver Chris Wiliamson was named First-Team All-State, along with linebacker J.D. Sosebee. Gainesville quarterback Mikey Gonzalez was named Second-team All-State, after throwing for 3,180 yards and 38 touchdowns as a senior.

For West Hall, it was equally as accomplished. Spartans kicker Bradley Hodgson and punter Anthony Lotti both earned First-Team All-State distinction. Also for West Hall, Kwon Williams was picked second-team All-State as an athlete.

Class AAAA state champion Buford had eight players named All-State, along with Jess Simpson as the Coach of the Year.

From Buford, Nick Polino and Hunter Holland (OL), Joshua Thomas and Austin Smith (LB), and defensive back David Curry were first-team selections.

In Class AAA, Jefferson also put eight on the All-State squad. First-team selections from the Dragons included wide receivers T.J. Skelton and Dalton Hill, sophomore offensive lineman Caleb Chandler and defensive back Tradd Porter.

The All-Classification Player of the Year was Washington County’s A.J. Gray. The senior quarterback and defensive back ran for 2,358 yards, passed for 1,810 yards and accounted for 60 offensive touchdowns, and he stepped up defensively with 10 interceptions and 63 tackles, including four interception returns for touchdowns.

On second-team All-State was Lumpkin County senior offensive lineman Jacoby Jackson. Honorable mention selections included East Hall quarterback Devin Watson, Jackson County quarterback Jacob Lewis and Banks County defensive back Malcolm Mitchell.
