Gainesville High's Spencer Ralston finishes first at US Open local qualifier

Gainesville High junior Spencer Ralston carded a 5-under 67 to win the US Open local qualifier Monday at Chateau Elan in Braselton.

He won by one shot over Jimmy Beck, from Columbus, and Paul Apyan, of Chattanooga, Tenn. With the win, Ralston moves on to the US Open sectional at Hawks Ridge in Ball Ground.

Ralston earned the win with a run of four consecutive birdies during his first nine holes. He made the turn to the final nine holes at 5-under par. He finished his round with seven birdies and two bogeys, both on the front nine.

The US Open is June 15-21 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington.

Over the weekend, Ralston also earned victory in the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour event at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville. He played his bogey-free final round Sunday with seven birdies to win by four shots over Will Kahlstorf (139).
