Flowery Branch boys, girls win at region cross country meet
Falcons boys and girls, Gainesville boys will compete at state

The Flowery Branch High boys and girls cross country teams swept the Region 8-AAAAA championship in Conyers on Saturday, earning a spot in this weekend’s state championship meet in Carrollton.

The Lady Falcons pinned down seven of the top nine individual spots, to finish well ahead of second-place Winder-Barrow, third-place Clarke Central and fourth-place Heritage. The top four individual teams will all race during the Class AAAAA portion of the state championship Saturday at Carrollton Elementary.

For the Lady Falcons, Erika Plummer (20 minutes, 28 seconds) earned first place and Hannah Grainger placed second.

Flowery Branch’s girls also took fourth-seventh place with Shannon Hoolahan, Mariah Millsap, Ashley Grant and Hailey Pierson.

In the boys’ race at region, Flowery Branch held off second-place Gainesville, third place Heritage and fourth-place Winder-Barrow.

Flowery Branch’s Jake Shewbert (16:02) was individual boys champion, followed by Grant O’Callahgan in third place. Alex Sosa was the Red Elephants’ top finisher at ninth overall.

At state, the Class AAAAA boys will run at 9:10 a.m., followed by the girls at approximately 9:50.
