Local and state high schools competed in the Flowery Branch Falcon Invitational swim meet on Friday at Frances Meadows Aquatic Center in Gainesville.

North Oconee High came in first for both the boys and girls competitions, but area high schools Flowery Branch and Buford both followed in second place, respectively.

The Buford girls were led by first-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley, won by Danielle Brooks, and the 200-yard freestyle relay. The winning relay team was comprised of Brooks, Libby Muret, Alina Martinez and Molly Moran. They defeated second-place finisher North Oconee by more than two seconds in the race.

The Flowery Branch boys also got a boost in the same relay, winning by more than two seconds over the Buford boys. The Falcon relay team of Conner Cudney, Jake Hansen, Robbie Mix and Zack Miller-Hogg finished with a time of 1:39.71.

Jim Sibley, Alex Muret, Trevor Johnston and Ben Wellington finished in 1:41.81 for Buford.

Miller-Hogg also took home an individual championship in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 49.91, ahead of second-place finisher Quinn McDaniels of Winder-Barrow (51.87). Gainesville’s Riley Monaghan took third in the event with a time of 51.98, and Chestatee’s Jack Hene took fourth at 52.64.

Both Flowery Branch’s girls and Buford’s boys also finished well, taking fifth and sixth, respectively.

The North Hall boys placed fifth, and the girls placed seventh.

The boys were led by Paul Powers, one of the day’s top individual performers. Powers, a sophomore, easily won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. He took both races by nearly five seconds over the second-place finishers. He was also a member of the North Hall 200-yard medley relay team that finished in sixth place in the day’s first event.

Other area teams to compete at the meet were Lumpkin County (both boys and girls) and Habersham Central (boys). Habersham finished in seventh out of 15 teams competing. Lumpkin County took 13th and 15th, respectively.
