High school scoreboard: East Hall volleyball's Thellman sets single-season record in Area 7-3A tournament

Savannah Thellman (51 assists) became the single-season record holder in assists as the East Hall High volleyball team notched wins over Dawson County (25-16, 25-21) and Fannin County (25-15, 31-29) before a second-round loss to Greater Atlanta Christian (25-6, 25-22) in Tuesday’s Area 7-3A tournament. 

Niyah Rucker led East Hall (29-16, 6-3 Area 7-3A) attack with 29 kills on top of her nine blocks, 10 digs and one service ace. Tessa Rider was not far behind with 20 kills, 26 digs, four assists and two blocks. Holly Poole (12 kills, 29 digs, two assists) and Macy Thomas (eight kills, two blocks) were others to pace the Lady Vikings.

East Hall continues Area 7-3A tournament play at 4 p.m. on Thursday against Dawson County.

FLOWERY BRANCH DEFEATS CEDAR SHOALS: Anna Marshall, led the Lady Falcons’ attack with seven kills and a block in an Area 8-5A win against Cedar Shoals (25-17, 25-12) in Athens. Ellie Luciani, had 19 digs, two assists and four aces for the Lady Falcons. Ashley Scott finished the night with six kills, six aces and seven digs for Flowery Branch (16-8, 3-3).

Flowery Branch plays Loganville in the Area 8-5A tournament on Saturday in Loganville.

NORTH HALL 2, LUMPKIN COUNTY 0: North Hall’s Melissa DeVerter recorded nine kills, five blocks and two digs in a win against Lumpkin County (25-7, 25-10). Autumn Tucker had nine kills with eight digs for the Lady Trojans, while teammate Lily Paschall had 24 assists, three aces and a kill.

North Hall hosts the area tournament at 4 p.m. on Thursday against Greater Atlanta Christian.

CHESTATEE SWEEPS WHITE COUNTY: Lindsey Bornhorst, Nicole Sedwick and Maddie Woodward had four kills each for Chestatee, defeating White County (25-10, 25-17) in the Area 7-4A tournament. Sophie Davis contributed 10 digs for the Lady War Eagles.

Chestatee dropped a match to Marist in the tournament, and faces West Hall on Thursday in the Area 7-4A tournament.

GAINESVILLE SWEEPS TRI-MATCH: Kenley Jordan led the attack with 18 kills, four aces, two blocks and a pair of digs during Gainesville’s wins against Oconee County (25-12, 25-14) and East Jackson (25-13, 25-20) for the team’s senior night. Senior Savannah Roys had 15 kills, four aces, 27 assists and eight digs for the Lady Red Elephants, while fellow senior teammate Abby Alexander finished the night with six kills.

Gainesville moves on to the Area 8-6A tournament, facing Habersham at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Winder-Barrow.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY SPLITS: Madison Dowdy had 14 kills, 16 digs with seven aces as Lakeview Academy defeated George Walton (25-6, 26-24) before falling to Athens Academy (12-25, 25-22, 15-25) in the first round of the Area 8-A Tournament. Sadie Thrailkill contributed nine kills with 16 digs for the Lady Lions, while teammate Garrett Green added nine kills, four blocks and six digs. Maddy Towles finished the night with five kills, four aces, 11 assists and four digs.

Lakeview Academy plays in the second round of the Area 8-A tournament at George Walton in Monroe.

WEST HALL ADVANCES TO THIRD-PLACE GAME: Ruby Guerrero had 13 kills in a loss against Blessed Trinity (25-11, 25-9) and a win against White County (28-26, 25-18) in the first round of the Area 7-4A tournament.

West Hall plays Chestatee on Thursday night for a third place finish.


Anabel Adams drove in five runs in Buford’s 12-0 win against Flowery Branch in the Region 8-5A tournament in Buford. Ansleigh Hollifield recorded six strikeouts for the Lady Wolves.

GAINESVILLE MOVES TO GAME THREE: Gainesville played Winder-Barrow in the Region 8-6A tournament, splitting the series with a 7-2 win and a 10-2 loss against the Lady Bulldoggs.

Gainesville plays the deciding game with Winder-Barrow at 5:30 p.m. today.
