High school golf: Gainesville High boys team takes third at Class 6A state championship
Red Elephants freshman Andrew Hughes shot 70 on final day, tied for fifth place overall

Hall County champion Andrew Hughes carded a 2-under par 70 for the Gainesville High boys golf program during the final round of the Class 6A state championship meet Tuesday at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Jekyll Island. 

The Red Elephants shot a combined four-best scores of 11-over par on the final 18 holes and took third place overall. The Red Elephants finished with a two-day total of 12-over par (588).

Combined with his first-round 74, the freshman Hughes was tied for fifth in the individual standings at even-par 144.

Gainesville’s Zayne Hilderbrand was 12th overall (3-over par) with a final-round 78 after shooting 69 in the opening round. Senior Davis Weaver carded a final-round 73 for the Red Elephants and was tied for 14th overall with a two-day total of 5-over par. 

Senior Ryan Hogan finished with a two-day total of 6-over par for Gainesville.
