High school basketball: Gainesville boys take second at Region 8-6A tournament

Rafael Rubel scored 25 points and Brent Kelly chipped in 13 for the Gainesville High boys in a 51-47 loss to Apalachee for the Region 8-6A championship Saturday in Winder. With the loss, the Red Elephants take the No. 2 seed and will host an opponent still to be determined to open state next week. 

DAWSON COUNTY GIRLS 77, CHEROKEE BLUFF 61: Clemson signee Kaylee Sticker scored a season-high 35 points for Dawson County (20-8) to lock up third place in the Region 7-3A tournament on Saturday in Gainesville. Marlie Townley finished with 14 points for Dawson County. The Lady Tigers took control of the game, leading 27-10 after the first quarter at North Hall.

With the loss, Cherokee Bluff will enter the playoffs as the No. 4 seed to the Class 3A state tournament.

Both await a first-round playoff opponent still to be determined.
