Lady Jackets blow by Army

ATLANTA — Alex Montgomery and No. 24 Georgia Tech appear ready for the start of ACC play.

Montgomery, rounding into shape after knee surgery, scored a season-high 21 points in 20 minutes off the bench and Deja Foster had a double-double with a career-best 14 rebounds as the Yellow Jackets improved to 13-2 with a 76-47 victory over Army on Saturday.

The victory was the eighth straight for Georgia Tech, which begins ACC action at No. 7 North Carolina on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets haven't lost since falling 56-50 at No. 9 Georgia on Dec. 6.

"Were all healthy heading into ACC play and Alex is hitting her stride," coach MaChelle Joseph said. "I feel very good about where we are."

Montgomery, a third-team all-ACC pick last season, hit a trio of 3-pointers against Army and grabbed eight rebounds. She is averaging 12.9 points in about 18 minutes per game.

"Its a huge spark," Joseph said of Montgomery's play in limited minutes. "She continues to amaze me with how productive she is. I like that opportunity to continue bringing her in off the bench, especially in ACC play. It gives her a chance to see the flow of the game."

Army, down 8-1 early, tied the game at 17, but Georgia Tech then went on a 20-6 run fueled by 10 points from Montgomery to lead 37-23 at halftime. Montgomery had 14 points at intermission.

"I'm very comfortable coming off the bench," Montgomery said. "I'm not quite 100 percent yet, but I'm getting close."

Georgia Tech had four players in double figures, with Foster and Sasha Goodlett scoring 12 points and Brigitte Ardossi contributing 11. Foster had 10 offensive rebounds and led the Yellow Jackets with six assists.

"I really didn't know I had that many," Foster said of her 14 total rebounds. "It surprised me. I was just going after the ball."

All-Patriot League choice Erin Anthony had a game-high 26 points for Army (6-7) and added seven rebounds.

Georgia Tech shot only 37.9 percent, but forced Army into 24 turnovers 15 in the first half.

"I was really impressed with Georgia Techs size and athleticism," Army coach Dave Magarity said. "I really like Georgia Techs balance. I really like how they play together. They just keep coming at you."

Opening ACC action at North Carolina is a tough assignment, but the Yellow Jackets prepared for it by playing just five of their 15 pre-ACC games at home.

"We're up for the challenge of playing at North Carolina," Foster said.

"It's a big test, but were ready," Montgomery said.
