ATLANTA — Janie Mitchell scored 23 points and Chioma Nnamaka added 20 points and five steals, leading Georgia Tech to an 83-73 victory over Florida State on Sunday.

“This was a great win for our program,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “I thought Janie (Mitchell) and Chioma (Nnamaka) stepped up and led the way. Our freshman were tough, especially on the offensive end.”

Georgia Tech (18-4, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a 44-39 lead at halftime and opened the second half with a 17-2 run to build a 61-41 lead with 11:30 left in the game.

The Seminoles (14-8, 4-3) came back with an 8-0 run, but were never able to seriously challenge the Tech women the rest of the way.

The Yellow Jackets forced Florida State into 29 turnovers and closed out the game with 17 steals. Jacqua Williams led the way with seven steals, her 11th game of the season in which she has finished with four or more.

“Jacqua (Williams) had several big defensive plays for us,” Joseph said. “She really changes the game on the defensive end.”

Tanae Davis-Cain came off the bench to lead FSU with 28 points before fouling out late in the game.
Alex Montgomery added 17 points and Iasia Hemingway had 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.

FSU got 13 points from Alysha Harvin and 12 from Jacinta Monroe.

A three-point play by Hemingway with a second remaining on the clock gave the Jackets a 44-39 advantage entering the locker room. The Seminoles shot a blistering 64.7 percent from the field but Tech knocked down six more shots to help open the halftime lead. The first half alone had nine lead changes and eight times the score was tied.

Georgia Tech will next travel to Miami on Thursday. The Jackets and Hurricanes will square off at the UnitedBank Center with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
