Former Gainesville and current University of Georgia golfer Spencer Ralston continued his successful summer Thursday with a round of 16 match play victory over Parker Coody in the U.S. Amateur in Pinehurst, N.C. With the win, Ralston advances to the quarterfinals, where he will take on Andy Ogletree on Friday at 2:45 p.m.

Following Thursday’s match, Ralston credited consistent putting for his win.

“(Coody) kind of struggled getting putts to fall, and I was making a lot of four to eight-footers,” he said. “I think just mentally that kind of wears an opponent down.”

Though Ralston still has a long road ahead of him, his success so far at the U.S. Amateur has him optimistic about his chances to win the entire tournament.

“If I keep playing like I’m playing, I think I could have a shot,” he said.
