The University of North Georgia baseball team split its Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Armstrong Atlantic State
University Saturday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium in Dahlonega, dropping the first game 11-2 before picking up a 6-5 win in game two.
The win in the day’s second contest gave the Saints the 2-1 win in the series, their first conference series win since taking two of three from Augusta State University on March 9-10.
ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC 11, NORTH GEORGIA 2: The Saints (15-24, 6-15) struggled mightily in the first game, committing three of their five errors in the first two innings. The Pirates (23-12) were able to only score one run off those errors, but it was enough to spark something as Armstrong went on to score three runs in the third and two more in the fourth compared to one run by North Georgia in the third.
Travis Naraine and Stephen Neidigh scored the pair of runs for North Georgia, while Eason Spivey had two hits in the first game. He would later knock two more hits in the second game.
NORTH GEORGIA 6, ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC 5: After the Pirates controlled the first game, it was the Saints’ turn in game-two as they streaked out to a 6-1 lead following a five-run sixth inning.
North Georgia did edge out to an early 1-0 lead with Tremayne Toorie scoring in the bottom of the first, but Armstrong Atlantic matched that run in the top of the third.
After the fourth and fifth frames passed without a runner crossing the plate, the Saints struck again in a hurry in the bottom of the sixth with five runs off five hits and an error. Naraine started things off as he scored off a single to right-center field by Brett Wright before Spivey scored off a single by Cameron Crawford.
NORTH GEORGIA 9, ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC 5 (Friday): Prior to the game, head coach Tom Cantrell was presented with a commemorative jersey marking his 500th win at North Georgia.
In the game, the Saints were able to control the offensive side of things nearly all the way through as the two squads combined for 27 hits and 14 runs.
The scoring started in the bottom of the second when right fielder Andrew Gordon scored off a single by Brad Barto. The Saints then extended the lead in the bottom of the next inning when Kenny Bellavance knocked Eason Spivey in with a single through the right side.
The University of North Georgia men’s golf team hosted Clayton State University and the University of West Georgia in a three-team match at Achasta Golf Club on Friday. The Lakers from Clayton State took home both the team and individual crowns with North Georgia finishing second in the tri-match.
For the Saints, Lumpkin County High graduate Aaron George, Will Brackett and Grant Rish led the way with matching 75s, which tied them with Fredrik Lindblom from Clayton State for fifth in the field. Will
McFarlin rounded out the scoring four for North Georgia with a 76.
Prior to the match, which also included women’s teams from North Georgia and West Georgia, the Saints spent time with Make-A-Wish child Robert from Flowery Branch.
Robert was able to put his putt-putt skills on display on the putting green and even shared some words with two former Make-A-Wish recipients on the Lady Saints team: Bridget Sandy and Gainesville High grad LeeAnn Noble. Both Sandy and Noble received similar wishes to Robert as all three went to Disney World as part of their wishes.
On the links, Alex Vetnar from Clayton State led the Lakers with a low round of 70 to win individual honors, while Clayton State finished seven strokes ahead of the Saints. Clayton State’s Tyson Beaupre also finished second as the scoring four all finished inside the top-10.
