College softball: North Georgia wins 7-0, earns No. 1 spot in region tournament

Sydney Sprague led the ninth-ranked University of North Georgia softball team with a pair of home runs in a 7-0 win against the University of Montevallo on Tuesday in Montevallo, Ala., locking up the regular-season league title and No. 1 seed for the Peach Belt Conference tournament.

With the win, the Nighthawks (41-10, 20-4 Peach Belt Conference) open the conference tournament against Francis Marion University at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Milledgeville.

Also for North Georgia, Jessica Finch and Stephanie Hartness had a pair of hits against Montevallo.

Kylee Smith picked up the win for the Nighthawks, throwing six innings and allowing four hits and a pair of walks.

During the regular season, North Georgia won 8-5 in nine innings and 7-4 in a doubleheader against Francis Marion in Florence, S.C.
