The Piedmont College women’s soccer team had little trouble defeating in-state foe Oglethorpe University Wednesday by a final score of 6-0, their fifth shutout victory in six games. The Lady Lions got two first half goals before four more scores in the second half to notch their sixth straight win to open the season, the best start by a Piedmont women’s soccer team in the NCAA era beginning with the 2003 season.
Opening up the scoring on the evening was junior Dilyn MacLean, who headed in a Haley Grimes corner with authority to put Piedmont up 1-0 in the 22nd minute. The score would stay at one-nil until Grimes hit a penalty kick. The sophomore midfielder stepped up to convert the PK just before halftime.
The first of four goals in the second half was made by senior midfielder Justine Clay, who converted on a long range shot over the head of the Oglethorpe keeper in the 48th minute, the first of two goals on the night.
After an own goal in the 49th minute made the score 4-0 Lions, Clay would strike once more with another long distance try, this time putting a free kick in the top corner, notching her second multi-goal performance in the last three games. With 13 minutes remaining, Shayna Rogers would add the exclamation mark, winning the ball at midfield just before lacing a 35 yard strike over the Oglethorpe keeper.
Piedmont will look for their seventh victory of the year when they travel to face South Region opponent Meredith College at 7 p.m. on Friday in Raleigh, N.C.
PIEDMONT FALLS AT HOME:The Piedmont College men’s soccer team lost to South Wesleyan 5-0 Wednesday at home. The loss is the worst for the Piedmont men’s soccer program since 2010 when the team fell by the same score to the then 10th ranked Emory University.
The Lions saw the Warriors jump on the board quickly as Raphael Fernandez notched his first score of the 2011 season on a penalty kick in the 6th minute of play. Later in the half, it was Daniel Restrepo getting a score to put the Warriors ahead 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, the action was dominated by Southern Wesleyan’s 2011 leading scorer Henry Villafranco as the Warrior notched his first hat-trick of the season, scoring in the 46th, 52nd, and 76th minutes. Piedmont gets back on the pitch this weekend when they host Averett University on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the Walker Athletic Complex.
