The University of North Georgia beat Mars Hill 6-2 and West Georgia 2-1 in eight innings to complete the Steak ‘n Shake Classic with a perfect 6-0 mark Sunday in Dahlonega. With the wins, the Nighthawks move to 10-2 on the season.
In Game 1, North Georgia scored four runs off of five hits in the third inning. Alisha Frierson doubled and Stephanie Hartness tripled during the third inning for the Nighthawks. Doubles by Kaylyn Anthony and Shelby Hammontree in the second inning helped to push across North Georgia’s first two runs.
Kylee Smith pitched four innings to earn the win for the Nighthawks. Amber Johns earned her first save with three innings in relief.
In the second game, Buford High graduate Bria Bush earned the complete-game victory in the pitching circle, allowing just six hits and two walks. Jessica Finch pushed a bunt single in the eighth inning, scoring Hartness from third base.
Hartness finished the second game 3 for 3 at the plate.
North Georgia visits Shorter for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Rome.
NOVA SOUTHEASTERN 9, NORTH GEORGIA 7: Michael Gouge had a three-run homer for the Nighthawks in the first inning of the final game of the three-game series Sunday against the defending Division II national champions in Dahlonega.
Steven Tomlinson added two hits and drove in a run for North Georgia.
North Georgia hosts Lynn University in a three-game series, starting at 4 p.m. Friday in Dahlonega.
